Overview

This modular system, designed and built within a US based Fortune 500 reference lab in 2016 during a prior engagement, has grown to manage various aspects of multiple genetics assay workflows across two different physical sites within the US (west and east coast). The system operates multiple clinical test modalities and processes specimen volumes in thousands per week.

Engagement Model and Project Management

  • Originated from a desired direction, business, and operational goals, instead of specifications or design details.
  • Utilized technology to eliminate manual paper and Excel-based processes; a key deliverable.
  • Co-led by our team under the oversight of the Scientific Directors, Medical Directors, and Lab Supervisors.
  • Iteratively collaborated closely with various SMEs within the R&D and operations departments for solution development, refinement, and implementation.
  • Built, tested, and released within both stringent client and industry standards for regulatory compliance.

Key Features and Capabilities

  • Integration with existing in-house LIS infrastructure for a complete integration of a 3rd-party bioinformatic pipeline and result report generation engine; a first for the company.
  • Automated label printing for specimens via integration with specialized robotics, and also providing manual label printing failover utilizing Zebra printers.
  • Automated primary plate map generation utilized for the lab workflow process.
  • Visual plate map management via a web-based tool with point-and-click functionality, lifecycle tracking, and customized PDF reports for operations.
  • Automated submission to both a specialized internal 3rd-party system and IonTorrent Suite instrument(s), with the ability to poll/monitor multiple IonTorrent instrument status.
  • Integration with array scanners to consume and orchestrate pipeline processing of array data for lab results.
  • Integration with existing enterprise in-house LIS infrastructure for order intake (Accessioning) and result submission via HL7 standards.
  • Integration with multiple pre-existing departmental systems as a function of various workflow steps, allowing the addition of new capabilities without disrupting existing workflows.
  • Management of barcode label printing used for specimen and various non-specimen purposes.
  • Custom-designed barcode label for Zebra printers in conjunction with a 3rd-party manufacturer, allowing a single label to be utilized for both aliquot tubes and 96-well plates.
  • Lab workflow processes that provided the ability for assay-specific sample repeat processing.

Support and Instrument Familiarization

  • Successfully worked with a hybrid team and transferred support over in 2021
  • Familiarization and integration with various instruments manufactured by: Hamilton, Qiagen, Thermo Fisher, Scinomix, and Illumina

Impact and Benefits

This modular system provided specific point solutions for multiple genetics assays managed by different departments. It eliminated manual processes, integrated with various instruments and systems, and provided a streamlined, efficient solution for high-volume sample processing. The system's robust design has ensured its longevity and continued use.
